I hope everyone is well? I have been busy but wanted to share my latest creation. I took two small wooden stars that have been in my craft tote for years and made a use of them. Sometimes assorted keys in the house lay randomly around. Well, no more, we have a cute little place for them now with my two wooden key holders. In this tutorial, I will share with you how I made them. You can use any style of shape you want. The wooden stars were giving to me but premade shapes are usually in your craft shops. Okay, let’s get started 🙂
What you’ll need:
- Wooden Shape that is at least 3/4″ thick
- Clay/ Chalk/ Mineral Base Paint – I used American Paint Company ❤
- Paint or foam brush
- Sand paper (120 grade)
- Hand drill or electric (to predrill the holes for the nails)
- Nails and wire (19g)
- Washers and anything you want to decorate
- Plaid CS11201 Mod Podge All-in-1 Glue Set, 8-Ounce, Gloss
- Plaid Mod Podge 16289 Silicone Craft Mat
The stars were given to me painted yellow and the point of clay paint is to give pieces a rustic look. Usually, two layers of different colors of paint is the goal but for this project I had three. The first was the bright yellow, then I decided on an off white and finally a mustard yellow for the top coat. I recommend, “American Paint Company” paints for its large selection of pastel and bright colors and its high-quality application.
Once you allow each coat to dry, you can now begin the sanding process. I used 120 fine sand paper and began to give my little stars the rustic look. You can see the bright yellow and off white trying to shine thru.
Now drill out pre holes so the wood doesn’t crack when you hammer in the nails.
When you have completed that task, now you can hammer in the nails without worrying if the wood could chip or crack. On the back, I wrapped 19G wire for the hanger and two small picture frame nails.
You can call it done, but I decided to add some extra hardware.
Cute key holders are now complete and are ready to hang!
I had fun making them and it felt good finally finding a project for those little stars. I hope you enjoy yourself making your own key holders.
See you next time 😀
